By d'Argent Mordred d’Argent was once one of the noble sons of
Bretonnia. He was the cowardly and snide bastard son of Duke d’Argent,
although he kept his father from finding out about his particularly unwanted
personality traits. Although he wasn’t in line in to inherit the
title of Duke, he did have a comfortable sum of money in his name on
which he could live out the rest of his life. This all came crashing
down when the Storm of Chaos came, and he was brought up to fight the
invading Norse attackers.
Due to his own cowardliness and inability to lead, he hired an army of
mercenaries to protect his homeland as his father and brothers rode to
the Empire to fight the bulk of Archaon’s Horde. The mercenaries
were successful, but his family found out about the dishonour. d’Argent
was disowned.
Having no more than his armour and his horse, he joined a mercenary company.
His current state of mind, said to be unbalanced by some and completely
insane by most, made him the ideal leader of a unit of heavy cavalry
to lead devastating charges which were equally dangerous to the cavalry
unit as to the enemy. Due to many tells of his exploits, men (and a few
women) of similar mindsets have flocked to his banner, including worshipers
of Solkan, Khaine, Ulric and Myrmidia.
Across the world, Old and New, he and his unit have earned many names.
Known as “The Frothing Ones” by many goblin and orc tribes
in the badlands and border princes, the “Lethkhar’y” by
a handful of tribes of Norse and even to the High Elves as “Lathian-Cadaith”,
they have earned the renown as the singly most insane cavalry force known
outside of the Chaos Wastes.
d’Argent himself was lost in the fire that consumed the Black
Tavern while chasing after the Skaven informant Calum Burt after a huge
Skaven army laid seige to Luccini, and since Gitsnik Blacktoof had recently
spent all of his money on an expensive, 50-gold-piece-a-day habit of
buying Fabriche Eggs from Kislev, they had to allow members of the Estalian
Inquisition to use the rebuilt Tavern as a outpost for catching Heretics
fleeing from Estalia. The Group is now lead in battle by a Khaine-worshiping
warrior, although all negotiations are made by other members of the Regiment
as he is often too busy hacking already deceased enemies to pieces for
several hours after battle.
It is not known what happened to d’Argent after the fire caused
by the Skaven, as no trace of him was found in the wreckage of the Tavern,
unlike the treacherous Calum Burt, whose twisted and gnarled skeleton
was found with a part of a Warpstone pendant. It is thought that the
informant burned to death in the most agonising way, and not slain before-hand
by Mordred d’Argent. However, d’Argent’s blade, Épée
de Bataille, was found in the wreckage, still in its sheath, which was
claimed by the Khaine-worshipper Luther Darkhart.
Despite Darkhart’s slight-insanity and blood-lust, in his saner
periods, he is loyal to d’Argent’s memory. A short while
after d’Argent’s death and the reorganising of the Regiment,
the younger and newer members brought up the idea of changing their name
to “Darkhart’s Devastators”, in which all the Devastator
troopers agreed with. When a vote was taken, it was unanimous that the
name should be changed. However, Darkhart didn’t approve of the
idea, after which he declared “Twenty ayes against one nay. The
Nays have it.”
Note: The leader of the Regiment doesn’t mater, as both d’Argent
and Darkhart can be represented with the same stats.
d'Argent's Devastators
Captian: Mordred d'Argent and, later on, Luther Darkhart
Motto: No line we cannot break, no payment we will not
take.
Battlecry: "Destroy! Despoil! Devastate!" is
often heard from the more coherent members. d’Argent’s Devastators (a unit consisting of d’Argent/Darkhart
and 4 Devastators including a musician and Standard Bearer) can be brought
for 248pts. Additional Devastators can be added to the unit at 24pts
each, to a maximum of 20.
They can be taken as a Special Choice in Dogs of War armies, or alternatively
a rare choice in all other armies but Bretonnians.

Weapons and Armour: d’Argent/Darkhart is armed with Épée
de Bataille, heavy armour and shield. The Knights are armed with Lance,
heavy armour and shield. All are mounted on barded horses.
Special Rules: Frenzy
Frenzy: All Knights in the Devastators are often rather unhinged, due
to religious zealousness or just plain craziness and thus have the
rules for Frenzy.
Épée de Bataille: d’Argent gained this sword early
in his career as a mercenary. Some say it was gifted to him by the Lady
of the
Lake in an attempt to bring him back to Bretonnia, who saw that d’Argent
would be a great asset to the military might of the land of chivalry.
Though d’Argent didn’t go back to Bretonnia, he kept the
sword.
It is rumoured that a flash of pure, white light enveloped the blazing
Tavern, even brighter than the flames, which was the sign of d’Argent
being carried off by the Lady of the Lake, and the Sword, being part
of his blasphemous past, could not be received back by the Lady as it
absorbed all of d’Argent’s sin to allow him to pass to the
after-life.
There were, of course, sceptics who claimed that the flash was in fact
a hidden cask of "Bugman's XXXX" going off behind the counter,
the resulting explosion throwing d'Argent's corpse many miles clear.
They were swiftly found brutally murdered, although no-one seemed willing
to investigate who killed them.
Épée de Bataille gives +1S to d’Argent’s/Darkhart's
attacks, has +1 to hit and adds an additional -1 to the enemy’s
armour save. |
